What’s Your Parenting Method? (CTFD & 8 More)

Apparently, there’s a “new” “revolutionary” parenting method that is rockin’ the Web these days.  Affectionately known as CTFD (Calm the F*** Down), it apparently stemmed from the idea that parents these days are much too competitive when it comes to their children and need to learn to CTFD when they realize that *gasp* their child isn’t doing something that another child of the same age is doing.  Because, apparently, every parent’s child needs to be more advanced than the other parent’s child.

By the way, my 8 month old is already doing algebra whilst standing on one hand.  What is your 8 month old doing? 😛

Anyways, I thought I’d try my hand at this and list some more REVOLUTIONARY parenting methods because, you know, I’m an overachiever and want to push the envelope even further than the inventor of CTFD and give parents an arsenal of methods to use.  I’m even going to leave out cuss words because, y’know, we wouldn’t want our children to develop bad habits, now would we?

Mommy Training Wheel’s Ultimate Guide To Stress-Free Parenting

  • 1.  JSAN (Just Smile and Nod)
  • Like when the lady at Walmart decides to harass you and make you feel like you’re a bad father for bringing your son into the store without any socks on.  (Happened to my partner the other day!)
  • 2.  LTYH (Listen to Your Heart)
  • Pretty self-explanatory.
  • 3.  DWWFY (Do What Works For You)
  • You want to nurse?  Great!  Choosing formula?  Awesome!  Half and half?  Super!  Exclusive pumping?  Stellar!  Co-Sleeping? Sure thing!  Baby in his own room?  Sounds good!  Rock/nurse  to sleep?  Excellent!  Put down awake?  Cool!  Cloth diapering?  Disposables?  BLW?  Cereal and purées?  Babywearing?  …  If it works for you, GO FOR IT!
  • 4.  SYAI (Say “Yes” and Ignore)
  • Like when you MIL insists that she is going to be able to spoon feed her grandson when he’s never been spoon fed before.
  • 5.  TYG (Trust Your Gut)
  • You know that something’s not right with you little one, but the pediatrician won’t listen?  Insist, insist, insist!
  • 6.  TADB (Take A Deep Breath)
  • Feel like you’re going to lose it?  Take a deep breath?
  • 7.  PBDAR (Put Baby Down and Regroup)
  • Baby still screaming no matter what you do?  Took a deep breath but still feel like you’re going to lose it?  Put your banshee-like baby down in a safe area and go outside so you can’t hear him/her anymore for a few moments.
  • 8.  DLMO (Don’t Linger, Move On)

Did you screw something up?  Perhaps you yelled at your kid in a fit of sleep-deprived-last-nerve-trampled-splitting-headache rage?  Learn from it and move on.

So, what method do you live by?  Do you have anything to add to the list?

  1. I am all over number 3, Do what works for you. I have three kids and I have done things a little differently for each of them, based on their needs and mine. Love this post! As for your 8 month old doing algebra while standing on one hand… My son was doing that at 4 months. By 8 months he was onto solving world hunger while juggling knives and balancing on a golf ball. Baby number 2 wasn’t nearly as advanced. By 8 months he was just figuring out physics. Number 3 is only 2 months, so we’ll have to see what she can do later on. 😀

    1. Hahahaha! Wow, baby #1 was waaaaay more advanced than my son. Maybe I should talk to his pediatrician to see what’s up?
I agree. Just as no two children are alike, no two parents are alike. By doing what works for both the parent and the child you can’t really go wrong, right?

  2. Do what works for you is the advice I have given every friend who has had a baby since my little one was born. I actually did a whole blog post on that a little while ago. It was the advice that no one gave me that I really wish someone had.

This whole post was full of awesomeness with a frosted chocolate cupcake, topped with chocolate chips, on top! Loved it!

      1. I know! I haven’t had a cupcake in a long time and I want one soooo badly! There’s this little cupcakery that makes a chocolate mint cupcake, which is my favourite. Yum!

Love this blogger so much. I find her words on Mommy Training Wheel’s – Ultimate Guide to Stress-Free Parenting a gold mine. I use all of them, as I am often in a “sleep-deprived-last-nerve-trampled-splitting-headache” bit of a rage. But all mom’s are suppose to feel like this right? Where they need the tricks-of-the-trade just to survive life and parenting. We are all different. We parent differently. We live differently. We survive life differently. We all have our own quirks. That’s what makes us unique. If we were all the same – the world wouldn’t be that interesting now would it. Just because one parent does one thing, or their child has moved on to another milestone (past your child) – doesn’t make you a bad parent. It makes us all human.

  4. I totally just reblogged this blog of yours. I love it to death. I use all 8 of your steps – every day and multiple times throughout the day. Very amusing – and make me laugh. My 2 1/2 year old is running for president, as he climbs Mt. Everest, and our 8 month old is an executive chef. 🙂

  5. Love this! We all need to be reminded to take it easy from time to time. This especially applies to me right now with potty training. My first two were pains but this third one makes them look sooooo easy! And, it’s not a competitive thing, thankfully. I am just sick of diapers and he is determined to break me!!! 🙂 I will have to come back and glance at this list as he pees BESIDE the toilet for the 50th time! haha!

    1. Hehe, yeah, I think we all need to be reminded of these things once in a while. With regards to the potty training, I remember my mom pulling her hair out with my little sister. She was so stubborn that she ended up changing her own diapers at one point!

  6. This is fantastic! I so need to work on DLMO, the damn guilt factor gets me every night. I
would like to add “RICBW” (remember it could be worse) my mom used to irritate me with telling me that but now I find some solace in it on rough days 🙂

  7. Love this and find myself subscribing to all of them from time to time. I tend to like #3 best. Though when it comes to having my mother in the room I tend to do a lot of #6 – haha!
